Essential Info

It's another busy day at work, and that conference call you're on is showing no signs of letting up. You realize it's already 3 p.m., and you haven't gotten that call from your kids letting you know they arrived home safely. But thanks to this video capture system, you can pull up your four-camera video surveillance system on your work computer and see your 12-year-old watching TV in the family room, while your 14-year-old is in the back yard skateboarding on the ramp he built — all without missing a word of your conference call! You can even have your home computer digitally record video footage when it detects motion, so if your kids were Internet chatting in the home office before they finished their homework, you'll have the evidence.

You can do all that and more with this state-of-the-art Four-Port Video Capture System that lets you remotely view up to four cameras in your home or business from anywhere in the world where you can get access to a LAN or a TCP/IP connection. This remarkable system works with your existing PC, eliminating the expense of investing in a dedicated security monitor, quad processor and time-lapse VCR! And unlike competing systems, this one works with any surveillance cameras, without any subscription fees apart from the broadband Internet service that you probably already have.

The system works by taking the baseband video signals from up to four color or black & white cameras, and outputting them to your Windows®-based PC. Images are shown in a quad display, so you can see all four cameras simultaneously. If you do want a record of what happened, you can configure your hard drive to begin recording images when motion is sensed on the video image, or at specific intervals. You'll be able to define any area of the screen to monitor for motion, even with non-standard shapes. The moment motion is detected within that area, the PC will immediately begin digitally recording. Plus, at a compression rate up to 300:1, you can save only critical moments, without being stuck with gigabytes of useless data, or without having to scan through hours of videotape. The video source (brightness, contrast, etc.), preview size, image quality and compression ratio are fully adjustable.

Designed to snap into the PCI slot of any Pentium II or better computer, the video capture card is built with four composite video input connectors. It fully supports NTSC and PAL video formats. Includes a CD-ROM containing the drivers for the capture card, server software for only Windows® 98, and remote viewing software for Windows® 98/2000/NT.

Basic, starter video capture system. The frame rate and resolution is very low. Even with a 420TVL camera, you will only be able to identify details within a few feet of the camera e.g. a face or a license plate. Unfortunately, I purchased this for outside cameras and it just doesn't have the resolution or frame rate to be very useful when most of the things you want to identify are 20 or 30 feet away. It might be good for indoor monitoring where the subject is very close to the camera. In addition, the viewing software is really poor: I can get it to run only once per session. If I quit the application, I must reboot the PC to be able to run it again. Also, since I have hundreds of video files, it takes about 10 minutes for it to load each cameras files into memory prior to viewing. It makes for a very painful process. In hindsight, I would have purchased a more expensive system had I known the limitations of this one. You get what you pay for...

Board is working well in my Ubuntu 6.06 Linux box. It was automatically detected, no driver tweaking was necessary. Note that, though it has four ports, it only has one BT878 chip (which means all 4 ports are handled by the one chip). I'm using it to pull video from two cameras (via ZoneMinder) at 640x480 and the frame rate is only about 2.5 FPS. It would be 5 FPS, but I've enabled the double frame grab thing to reduce interlacing. At 320x240, frame rates would be ~4x, but I like the bigger images... If you need higher frame rates, you'd want a card that ideally had one bt878 for each port. But, overall it is a decent budget card.

DOMINICK E -- nutley, NJ   12/2/2003
Works great. I bought two for two different locations. Very satisfied!
LARRY -- novi, MI   9/11/2003
The CD wasn't readable on the pc I wanted set up as my system. I was able to load the drvrs. and programs on another pc and file transfer same. Overall I have run the personal shakeout tests and the card/system seems reliable. I like the interchangeablity of different camera choices. I have not run the remote monitor system debug yet but do not anticpate any problems.

The order referenced in this e-mail was a quad video card for the pc, with a software package for Windows XP/2000. In order for this product to work properly, I had to download a video codec from a third party manufacturer (Indeo) at an additional cost of $14.95. I felt this an unreasonable demand from Grand Tec though, I went ahead and paid the fee. It seems that Microsoft no longer does business with Indeo thus, the "once included with windows" driver must be purchased. This fact would have influenced my decision to purchase.

Great service. Your products are a bit pricy as compared to others, but you have a FULL catalog that is great!
